Taco Shop Poets

Taco Shop Poets is a segment from the national PBS series, “Visiones”, on Latino art and culture. The Taco Shop Poets are a group of spoken word artists devoted to creating community empowerment through the arts. Taking their name from the ubiquitous taco shops throughout the border region, they are committed to taking poetry to where people live and breathe, breaking out of the bourgeois culture of coffee shops. As their name suggests, the group is best known for performances in taco shops and other non-traditional poetry performance spaces, often focusing on Latino, Chicano and immigrant themes.
